New PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino declined to comment on his team`s interest in one of the biggest stars in modern football and his compatriot Lionel Messi.
The Argentine striker, whose contract expires at the end of the campaign, tried to leave Barcelona with a free transfer last summer, when he was flatly denied, but now he seems closer than ever to parting with the Catalans.
However, Pochettino made an interesting explanation of his interest in Messi and how he was very close to attracting him as Espanyol`s coach.
Messi at PSG? I will not comment. When I was in Espanyol and Southampton it was a dream for me to have the best players. We were close to renting Messi in Espanyol. Talks were advanced and he was close to coming to us, but then he made a very strong match adviced by soccer rankings for the Joan Gamper trophy and that put an end to everything.
Th en we met over the years in London and Italy, we both share our love for Newell`s Old Boys, where we started for football. I know what`s going on, I watch all the teams from West Ham to Valladolid, nowadays you have to have an idea of each team. I really don`t want to talk about Messi, because everything is expanding to a huge extent, said Pochettino.
